On this day in 1945, after six long years of battle, Japan's military forces surrendered in Asia and the Pacific, bringing the Second World War to an end. The war began in the Pacific with the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941; other Japanese forces attacked two British colonies.
