The first version of Beidou was started in 1994 but became operational by 2000 - it wasn't a global system at the time - only providing satellite navigation services for China. This was expanded to cover the whole of the Asia Pacific region by 2012 and the third and final version - which is almost complete - will give Beijing global coverage.
