Futures for the S&P 500 were negative, predicting that Wall Street would open down at the start of trading. European stocks were down more than 1 percent, after a mixed day in Asia. Other markets also signaled rising worries among investors. Prices for U.S. Treasury bonds, typically regarded as a safe haven in troubled times, rose.
