The flame-filled landmark named Darvaza gas crater is located in Turkmenistan, Central Asia, and has earned itself the nicknames Door to Hell or Gates of Hell. The natural gas field was found in 1971 by Soviet engineers and was originally believed to be a substantial oil field site.
