Tokyo's Nikkei 225 fell by an unusually wide margin of 2% and market benchmarks in Hong Kong, Sydney and Southeast Asia also retreated. Chinese and Korean markets were closed for a holiday. Wall Street's benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 1.8% on Wednesday after a survey by payroll processor ADP found hiring weakened in September.
