NEWPORT, RI—A mystery is unfolding at St. Mary's Church on the corner of Spring and Memorial Boulevard. When workers removed the 1,674-pipe organ from the choir loft, as part of a restoration project, they discovered a carving of a woman's face. She had been concealed and all but forgotten for some 200 years.
