Ralph Emerson McGill grew up in Chattanooga in the early 1900s and probably did more in his writings at The Atlanta Constitution to aid the Civil Rights movement than any other white Southerner. McGill was born on the family farm at Igou's Ferry outside Soddy, Tenn., in 1898. His grandfathers had taken opposite sides during the Civil War.
