Mordecai Manuel Noah had a grand vision for Grand Island in 1825. Nearly two centuries ago, the Jewish-American journalist, diplomat and philanthropist viewed the island as a utopia for Jews around the world, purchasing 2,500 acres of land to build his sanctuary, to be called Ararat. For many reasons, Ararat never took off.
