Her grieving family fled first to Italy and then to Lincoln in 1994, sponsored by Sheridan Lutheran Church and its pastor, Bud Christenson. Obradovic was 17. She finished high school at Lincoln Southeast, graduated from UNL and got her master's and Ph.D. in New York, where she lived for 17 years.
