The 16-year-old captain of the Woodlawn High School football team gunned down in his own east Birmingham bedroom died while his mother and other family members desperately tried to save him. Vatongula Edwards, a mother of six, said she got home from work about 11:20 p.m. Friday and visited with the family like she always does.
