Hidden deep within the archives of the Iowa State Historical Building, lies a letter dated August 26, 1918. It was addressed to the governor of Iowa, who replied that the information contained therein had been forwarded to Iowa's Secret Service. The letter was signed by three businessmen in Taintor, Iowa, asking that Bertha Van Wyk be deported.
