The warm tributes pouring in Saturday and Sunday have delved very little into McKinney's tough early years in Seattle, after taking the pulpit of Mt. Zion in 1958. "The Mountain" played a central role in moving mountains. Seattle, in the early 1960's, extended a cold shoulder to its African-American citizens.
