We were sitting at The Egg & I, waiting for my waffles and her turkey sandwich to come out on a Sunday summer afternoon. It was Memorial Day weekend, and there were hordes of eligible people to meet around us gorging on French toast, pancakes and eggs. She asked the question and it hung there, reverberating across the dining room walls.
