About £1.3m was crowdfunded by 83,000 well-wishers to help pay for experimental treatment in the US, and hundreds of thousands more signed petitions for him to be given just one chance. It mobilised a “Charlie’s Army” of supporters outside Downing Street, Buckingham Palace and the supreme court.
