The couple and their children, some from her husband's previous marriage, moved to Waitara, Taranaki. Pearl says all their kids were unfortunately "brought up in a dysfunctional family". "I really thought there was no hope for us. I just thought 'I'm forever going to be a mum'. That's it. And a drunk and a drugger, because that's all we did.
