In Detroit, Red Wings fans throw octopi on the ice . On Friday, a radio station based just outside of Pittsburgh hung an 8-foot replica of a hammerhead shark from a crane, The shark dangles below a sign that says “Let’s Go Pens” and “Kill the Sharks” alongside stylized corporate call letters for WDVE.

Steve Hershey, 77, a sportswriter specializing in golf coverage at USA Today and earlier in basketball at the now-defunct Washington Star, died May 11 at his home in Ormond Beach, Fla. The cause was a heart ailment, said his son, Steve Hershey Jr. Mr. Hershey was born in New York City and grew up in Bethesda, Md.

Alice Minassian Madenlian was born in Alexandria, Egypt on March 1, 1943. She was the youngest child of Missak and Arshaluyse Minassian, and Levon, Sona and Zabel’s youngest sister. In her early years she attended Boghossian Armenian School, and later, Scottish School for Girls high school, where she graduated with honors at the young age of 16.
