U.S. Sen. Tim Scott long has been an advocate of opening South Carolina’s coast to offshore oil exploration. But public feedback on the issue has caused the Charleston Republican to change his mind. And, evidently, he is not alone. While Scott continues to believe in the possibilities of offshore.... |

This fascinating aerial view of Leicester shows the sheer scale of the demolition work which took place to achieve a new shopping vision for the city. It was taken in July 1970 by a Mercury photographer who was standing on the roof of what was then the Top Rank Ballroom. |

Pope Francis is making the first papal visit to Ireland in 39 years, joining Catholics from around the world, but the celebrations will be held in the shadow of unrelenting revelations of sexual abuse and cover-ups that have eroded the moral authority and unity of the church. |

People have high expectations and I think he's aware of that and he'll do his best. He's here to celebrate family and all that means. I hope it will rejuvenate the Church and give encouragement. |

To the editor: I feel it is important to tell some interesting facts about First Baptist Church and its congregation that maybe you didn’t know or had forgotten. It is unique in many ways. It is the oldest church in Franklin (1832), and its members also helped start Franklin College (1834). |
