Arts writer John Townsend, a champion of Twin Cities theater, dies at 60
Townsend found out two years ago that he had hypertension. When he didn’t show up for work Oct. 24, authorities did a welfare check. “We think that he possibly had a stroke or heart attack, or both,” said his mother, Gail Townsend of Charlotte, N.C. “We’re devastated shocked beyond belief. It’s tragic for a mom to lose a child.

“I’m sorry about that, my boy,” the old man said. “You fellas are different. The white men came to your country long before they came up here. They wanted the green, wet country first. We were able to keep stuff. You fellas couldn’t keep anything.” Roach had left home at 15, ended up in Sydney at....

Four Shows at the Center of a Golden Age of Hip-Hop Television
It is a golden age of hip-hop television, and for the moment, the standard in soft-focus nostalgia is “Untold Stories of Hip Hop,” on WE tv, hosted by the mellifluous, sometimes cloying Angie Martinez. It is a magazine profile show in the Barbara Walters mode, with an Oprah-ish aspiration to air narratives of triumph and personal trauma.

Your thoughts on imagining God, cardinal leadership, climate change and more
The church holds all of us to a high standard, and I would say that we are committing idolatry whenever we re-create a god in our own image, a god who allows us to redefine sexual ethics based on whatever is accepted in our own culture, who bids us abandon as antiquated the traditions that have been handed down to us.

The Cure for the Plague is Decency
As the linguists George Lakoff and Mark Johnson once observed, we live by metaphors. They govern how we think, experience, and act. Not only are there metaphors that we live by but there are metaphors that we die by. At times, quite literally: in Rwanda in 1994, Hutu Power radio stations described Tutsis as snakes.

Verse of the day

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Ps. 24.4, 5 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew, 5. 3
