James L. Bass Jr. still went to work every day until two weeks ago. On Mother's Day, sitting in the sunshine on his patio, Bass, who lived alone at his home in Carthage, Tennessee, fell and suffered severe head trauma. His son and daughter, who live nearby, took turns caring for him around the clock until he died comfortably at home on Thursday.
