From the Archives, 1991: Black cloud smothers Melbourne from Coode Island fire
At least eight storage tanks containing more than six million litres of toxic chemicals on Coode Island burnt for more than two hours yesterday, belching a towering black cloud over central Melbourne and the western suburbs. Multiple wildfires are burning in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. Cal Fire is referring to them collectively as the CZU August Lightning Complex.
